When he was working as a drug Czar in Venezuela, he managed to expose corruption in the Venezuelan government. This discovery didn’t go well with his family as it led to the capture and torture of his dad in prison.

Later on, when protesting against the Hugo Chavez government and regime, his mother was shot dead. His cousin Leopoldo was captured for opposing the Chavista regime and is currently being held as a political prisoner in Venezuela.

Thor Halvorssen claims that he adores people and also adores humanity. According to Halvorssen, he also cherishes those people who rise against oppression and speak for themselves and on behalf of others. As a good example of leadership, he let Vaclav Havel serve as the chairman of the HRF before his ultimate death.

Later on, he continued the gesture by appointing Garry Kasparov as the chairman. Kasparov was a Russian activist who was brutally beaten and carried while being punched by Russian police in a protest in Moscow.

Halvorssen has also had his experience with injustice while traveling the Vietnamese City of Ho Chi Minh City. He had gone to interview the leader of a banned church, Tich Quando.

This was a person who had been on house arrest for 28 years. He managed to tape an interview with this leader but was discovered by Vietnamese authorities. He was detained and claims to have been tortured. He was only released when he managed to tell the authorities that he was a Buddhist seeker. Learn more about Thor Halvorssen:
